Muğla Kültür Sanat – Menteşe Belediye Tiyatrosu (MBT), İngiliz edebiyatının ölümsüz yazarı William Shakespeare adına düzenlenen Uluslararası Shakespeare Festivalinde sahne aldığı İngilizce “Juliet ve Romeo” uyarlamasıyla büyük beğeni topladı. 2021 yılında Menteşe Belediyesi bünyesinde Önder Çakır’ın kurucu yönetmenliğinde kurulan tiyatro topluluğu, bu önemli kültürel etkinlikte sahneye koyduğu mizahi yorumla dikkat çekti. Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi (SDÜ) ev sahipliğinde, Batı Dilleri ve Edebiyatı Bölümü ile Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi Sahne Sanatları Bölümü tarafından düzenlenen ve Devlet Tiyatroları ile Devlet Opera ve Balesi Genel Müdürlüklerinin de desteklediği festival, Türkiye’de Shakespeare adına düzenlenen ilk ve en kapsamlı organizasyon olma özelliğini taşıyor. Lütfü Çakmakçı Kültür Merkezi’nde sahnelenen oyun, klasik Romeo ve Juliet hikâyesini İngilizce ve mizahi bir dille yeniden yorumladı. Yönetmenliğini Yağmur Erten’in üstlendiği oyunun sonunda, oyuncular ve yönetmen dakikalarca ayakta alkışlandı. Festival kapsamında gösterdikleri performans nedeniyle MBT ekibine özel bir teşekkür de geldi. Oyunun sonunda, SDÜ Öğretim Üyeleri Dr. Yeşil Sultan Akbay ve Dr. İlker Özçelik’in yanı sıra, İngiltere’den özel olarak Menteşe Belediye Tiyatrosunun İngilizce oyunu için gelen Leicester Üniversitesi’nden Prof. Dr. Philip Shaw tarafından yönetmen Yağmur Erten ve oyunculara teşekkür plaketleri takdim edildi. Shakespeare Festivali boyunca tiyatro gösterimlerinin yanı sıra, defile, sergiler, film gösterimleri, sone okumaları, söyleşiler ve atölye çalışmaları gibi çok sayıda bilimsel ve sanatsal etkinlik gerçekleştirildi. Festival, hem ulusal hem uluslararası katılımcıları bir araya getirerek kültürel etkileşimi ve yaratıcı sanat üretimini teşvik etmeyi sürdürüyor.

A Shakespearean Salute in English from Menteşe Municipal Theatre: “Juliet and Romeo” Receives Standing Ovation at International Festival
Muğla Culture & Arts – Menteşe Municipal Theatre (MBT) received great acclaim with its English adaptation of “Juliet and Romeo,” performed at the International Shakespeare Festival held in honor of the immortal English writer William Shakespeare. Founded in 2021 under the directorship of Önder Çakır within the Menteşe Municipality, the theatre troupe drew attention with its humorous interpretation in this major cultural event. Hosted by Süleyman Demirel University (SDU) and organized by the Department of Western Languages and Literatures and the Faculty of Fine Arts – Department of Performing Arts, the festival is the first and most comprehensive event in Turkey dedicated to Shakespeare. It is also supported by the State Theatres and the General Directorate of State Opera and Ballet. Staged at the Lütfü Çakmakçı Cultural Center, the play offered a humorous and English-language reinterpretation of the classic Romeo and Juliet story. Directed by Yağmur Erten, the performance ended with prolonged standing ovations for both the actors and the director. In recognition of their performance, the MBT team received special thanks. At the end of the play, Dr. Yeşil Sultan Akbay and Dr. İlker Özçelik, faculty members of SDU, along with Professor Dr. Philip Shaw from the University of Leicester in the UK – who attended the festival specifically for MBT’s English production – presented thank-you plaques to director Yağmur Erten and the cast. Throughout the Shakespeare Festival, numerous academic and artistic events took place, including theatre performances, fashion shows, exhibitions, film screenings, sonnet readings, talks, and workshops. The festival continues to promote cultural exchange and creative artistic production by bringing together national and international participants.
